Tiszafured
After a couple of days scorching on the Hortobagy campsite we decided to move on to Tiszafured which was about 45 kms away. What a difference! The campsite Thermal Strand Camping was lively, it had trees, a restaurant and a thermal bath (see photo) that was free to campers. It was also much much cheaper, about £11 a night, although we got the slightly discounted senior rate.
The campsite is popular with locals and with Germans, as usual we were the only Brits around, however a Swedish family arrived one day and they spoke English so it was nice to speak to someone on a campsite for a change. Brits have been a rare sight now for some weeks and we find that our GB plate does not clarify where we are from. We guess that people may know UK or England, we shall buy a flag.
From Tiszafured we headed for the Szálkahalom steppe area of the national park and saw an amazing number of Kestrels (must have been upwards of 20) including adults feeding fledglings and family groups of three and four in a small area of woodland. At a nearby small lake we reckon we saw some Godwits but they were too far away, and we then had to beat a retreat when we were crossing a dodgy bridge and Gilroy stepped on a plank which had a nail through it. The nail went through his sandal and into his foot, and much thrashing and wailing ensued until Sheila yanked the plank away from both foot and shoe. It was still painful by the time we got back but the thermal pool has eased it somewhat.

Tiszafured is the main town of the Tisza area which itself is dominated by Lake Tisza, another popular holiday resort. We cycled down to the lake one day and took a short hop in a boat to one of the islands where we walked through the woods and were able to bird watch - or in the case of the bittern - bird listen.
This rickety bridge and the lily pond below were found on the little island mentioned above.
