Saraspotok
.Rather unpromisingly our first day in Hungary started with a thunderstorm but then it cleared up so we cycled into Sarospatok and looked at the Castle which has a fine old Red Tower and is famous because a revolt against the Habsburgs was plotted underneath the rose in one of the rooms and thus the term ‘sub rosa’ was invented.
We stayed at Tengerszem Camping - a large campsite near the spa. Pitches were hedged and near the sanitary block. Lots of school parties while we were there.

We also had a gander at a couple of the buildings designed by Imre Makovecz (we think he must be famous) – we were not unduly impressed by the cultural house but thought that the Hild Udvar shopping centre was rather good. A pity that both were in rather poor condition for such recent buildings.
After the unpromising start it got very hot – well into the thirties – and we fled into a shaded courtyard in town for our lunch where we both had the ‘pot luck’ tourist menu which turned out to be broth with alphabeti spaghetti, with a chilli paste you could spoon into the soup to liven it up, then veal (or it might have been pork) in a creamy sauce with twirly pasta. It all went down very well with a beer, and cost only £10 the lot.
Sarapotok is something of a university town, there is a famous Calvinist college here, the guide book says it is something of a Hungarian Cambridge. We did not notice any resemblance.
