Myra
Lycian tombs
We Cirali at 7am to avoid any down-coming traffic on the narrow, bendy access road and stopped briefly at a nearby town to pick up money from an ATM and bread and borek (warm cheesy savoury pastry) which we ate en route in lieu of breakfast. We were still heading for Saklikent Gorge but on the way we stopped at Myra to admire the Lycian Tombs and Roman Theatre (10YTL apiece entry) and then on to Kale to the 2nd century St Nicholas Church – Santa Claus himself, though he wasn’t there because the Italians stole his body and took it to Bari. The church was full of Russians – St. Nick being very big there – and there was the nice contrast of women in very tight and short shorts but with their heads covered as a mark of respect.
