We were so concerned that we would run out of time on this trip and not get to Estonia we decided that once we got to Lithuania we would visit a few places there and in Latvia before heading north. Doing this meant that we would get as far north as we intended and could pick up interesting places on the way back south. As it happened we thought Estonia was excellent and so our plan meant that we could, and did, stay in Estonia for quite some time.
Although Estonia tends to get grouped with Latvia and Lithuania as one of the Baltic States it is rather different from its neighbours. It is a little more western and it looks to its neighbours Finland and the other Scandinavian countries. To our ears Lithuanian sounds a bit like Finnish too.
Roads were good and campsites plentiful, although in remoter places there were gravel roads. In Estonia a number of the campsites were linked to hotels and guesthouses. Most campsites had free wifi too. More info at www.camping-estonia.ee
Finally if you are thinking of going to Estonia remember that Russia is very close indeed. It is possible to visit St Petersburg from Estonia but you need to plan ahead as there are visas to be sought and also you need an invitation to visit in addition to having booked accomodation. There are regular coaches from Tallinn to St Petersburg and they are Also it is possible to take a mini cruise from Helsinki and you don't need a visa for this. We didn't do it and realised it was impractical to go on the spur of the moment. We will save St Petersburg for another time.
